Holmfirth comes as a great surprise for some visitors to the area. It is a rare find – beautiful, charming and full of character. A quintessential old mill town, located at the heart of the stunning Holme Valley, Holmfirth attracts visitors from far and wide with its easy access into the South Pennines for walkers, cyclists and wildlife lovers alike.
Eagled-eyed visitors may recognise parts of the town from the classic TV show, The Last of the Summer Wine and can relax with a cup of tea and a slice of cake in Sid’s Café.
More recently, in 2014, the breath-taking countryside around Holmfirth played host to the Yorkshire stage of the Tour de France with Holme Moss, the high moorland lying between the Holme Valley and the High Peak districts of Yorkshire and Derbyshire respectively.
Admire the cyclists and fell runners that have taken on the challenge of Holme Moss or simply admire the stunning views from the top.
The town is full of shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. It has a full and lively festival programme. The Folk Festival takes place annually in May and plays host to musicians and dancers in venues throughout the town.
The Arts Festival takes place in June and offers music, theatre, workshops, exhibitions, installations and guided walks, with the aim of encouraging local communities to engage with the arts and their local heritage but welcomes visitors and artists from around the world.
The Food and Drink Festival takes place in September and although food takes centre-stage, there is entertainment for all the family.
There is no need to restrict a foodie visit to September however, as the Holmfirth Vineyard offers great food and wine in a picturesque setting throughout the year.
Beyond Holmfirth are the nearby cities of Leeds, Harrogate and Manchester, all reachable by car in around an hour or less. Visit the footballing greats in Manchester, shop until you drop in Leeds or pamper yourself in the elegant spa town of Harrogate.
