Things To Do in Whitby, Nr Ruswarp
Sitting right in the heart of the fishing port of Whitby, at the mouth of the River Esk on the North Yorkshire coast. One or two couples, a family or group of friends, plus a four legged friend, will love the character of this compact town, with its steep streets winding down to the harbour.
On the way there, you’ll pass large numbers of pubs, cafes, fish and chip shops and restaurants, any time of the year. Dogs especially will love exploring the narrow streets and ginnels, which is what back lanes are called in this part of the world.
Whitby is home to many famous festivals and events across the year. There’s the Beer Festival, Folk Week, Regatta Week, and the 60s Festival dotted around the calendar. Also, don’t be surprised if you see groups of people wearing a lot of black; Whitby is famous for its Goth weekends. This is because Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, wrote the book here. If that’s your bag, there are Dracula-themed guided walks through the town.
Other days out often include the sea, including various fishing charters and a whale watching tour. Across Whitby Bridge, Captain Cook is the inspiration for a museum and other visitor attractions.
Whitby has miles of sandy beach for people and pet to explore, and also sits on the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast. There are some stunning walks and views to be had along this stretch of coastline, with cafes and eateries just where you need them. The North York Moors National Park is also next door.
Cobweb Cottage is a superb, character-filled original fisherman’s cottage in the heart of a real fishing town. It retains all its charm, including the narrow ginnel which runs down the back. The living room is perfect for cosy evenings in, around the wood burner in its stone chimney breast. The superb kitchen has everything a willing chef could want.
You’re more likely to be tempted out into the town, which boasts hundreds of lovely pubs, restaurants and quaint shops, not to mention world famous fish and chips. Whitby has attractions to suit history buffs, music fans and lovers of the off-beat, so feel free to relax whatever you’re into.
Ideal for a romantic weekend or a group holiday, the local scenery and coast are perfect for getting away from the stress of the city.
