Things To Do in Whitby, East Yorkshire
Hidden in a lane off the cobbled streets of Whitby, the perfect place to explore this old fishing town and all it has to offer. A couple with an older child, or a small group of friends, will love the accommodation and the location. Also, it’s a great place to take a pet on holiday, as he or she will never be bored.
Shops, pubs and restaurants all a matter of yards away, spread throughout the town. Take a guided tour and see the sights, starting with the magnificent Whitby Abbey, dominating the East Cliff across the harbour. There are plenty of boats waiting to take you out into the sea, either for fishing or whale watching.
For fresh air and exercise, Whitby takes some beating. There’s a beach on the east the harbour mouth, just under the 199 steps which lead up to the Abbey. Also, the west side has a small beach under the whalebone arch, at the bottom of the steep cliff entrance. At the far side of these cliffs is Whitby Beach itself, which stretches three miles to the west. At the far end is the dog friendly beach, with a couple of cafes ready to refresh two and four legged walkers alike.
The town is surrounded by great walks and dramatic sights, plus lots of wildlife and unspoiled countryside. The North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast stretches south to Robin Hood’s Bay and further towards Scarborough, via the A171 coast road. Further inland are the North York Moors, which are especially lovely when seen from the two railway lines.
Pebbles Cottage would suit a couple looking for a romantic weekend away, with its double bedroom up on the second floor of this lovely fisherman’s cottage. It’s also perfect for a small family, plus doggie companion, to enjoy the delights of a unique fishing port and town.
Its central location makes it a great base to explore Whitby itself, which is now home to several festivals throughout the year, plus many Goth weekends. You’ll never have far to walk to taste great fish and chips, local beers or more exotic cuisines and wines. There’s lots of funky shops in the town, so it’s a great place to get some unique souvenirs.
On the doorstep are a National Park and Heritage Coast, not to mention miles of beach, which are perfect for de-stressing.
