Things To Do in Whitby, East Yorkshire
Nestled in the old winding streets of Whitby, within easy reach of the harbour and three miles of sandy beach just to the west of the river mouth. Smuggler’s Cottage was no doubt perfectly placed for that activity, at the mouth of the River Esk.
Just outside the front door are miles of streets and ginnels to explore, which your furry friend will love. For humans, there are countless pubs, cafes and quirky restaurants all around the town, which is very compact, although steep. The many local fish and chip shop owners compete for who’s best, so you can judge. Whitby also has lots of antique shops and gift emporiums, one of which is right next door to Smuggler’s Cottage.
For a day out, take the tour bus, which takes in all the town’s famous landmarks, including the magnificent Whitby Abbey and St. Mary’s Church which overlook the harbour and river mouth. As well as stretching your legs along the beach, there are some lovely clifftop walks to enjoy. Nearby is the North Yorkshire and Cleveleand Heritage Coast, which has some spectacular views and wildlife. Also close by is the North York Moors National Park, which has plenty to offer day trippers. You can take the car, or you could try the scenic train routes which go from Whitby onto the Moors. The Esk Valley line passes through lots of preserved Moorland villages, while the steam locomotive line puffs to Pickering via Goathland, home of the Heartbeat television series. Don’t forget to get some doggie treats while you’re out.
Smuggler’s Cottage is a superb, Grade II listed town house spread over three floors, via steep staircases. These might be challenging for some, but the character of the cottage is like no other. Cosy living room with flame effect fire in a hearth, surrounded by comfy sofas. Cosy dining room next to compact but fully modern kitchen, all perfect for quiet nights in.
Through the day, Whitby is literally right on your doorstep, waiting to be explored. Enjoy all the delights of this wonderful fishing port, and its many world famous attractions.
Stretch your legs with your furry friend along the lovely beach, or on the clifftops of the heritage coast. Take a trip onto the Moors, and sample the superb scenery and local tea rooms. A great place to spend a few days away from it all.
