Things To Do in Whitby, Nr Saltwick Bay
The historic town of Whitby is famous for its cobbled streets, its traditional smoked kippers and its abbey which is almost 1,500 years old. The inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the ruins of this gothic abbey have fantastic views out to sea and dogs are allowed to explore with their owners. Climb the famous 199 steps to the abbey to appreciate the views for yourself.
The last traditional smoked kipper house in Whitby, Fortune’s Kippers, is a must-visit for an insight into one of Whitby’s oldest traditions. Get there early to make a purchase, the shop closes once the smoked kippers for the day are all sold! Shoppers will love the independent shops in Whitby, from antiques to books or Whitby Jet, a unique fossilised gemstone is only found in Whitby and has been worn in jewellery by locals for centuries.
Walkers will love the Cinder Track, a designated coastal walk between Whitby, bustling Scarborough and quaint, quiet Robin Hood’s Bay. Whitby, Scarborough and Robin Hoods’ Bay, as well as nearby Staithes and Runswick Bay, may seem like lovely seaside resorts today but they hide a history of smuggling for that essential of British essentials, tea, over a period of 150 years.
With high taxes on tea in the 18th and 19th century local smugglers took to piracy and smuggling, hiding their contraband in the many caves that line the rugged shores and taking advantage of their knowledge of the tides and local friendships to bring their wares to the deserted beaches around the towns. Today you can enjoy the cobbled streets, small shops and tea in the cafés safe in the knowledge that you are not drinking smuggled goods!
For an outdoor day head to Falling Foss Waterfall in The North York Moors National Park for walks with your pooch. There are several walks and a café and picnic area for food and drinks. Enjoy a day out in Goathland and visit the local steam train station, now part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the location used for Hogsmeade Station in Harry Potter.
Tidal Retreat is an excellent base for couples who want to explore the history and charming cobbled streets of Whitby and the Yorkshire Coast yet have easy access to the beautiful countryside over the North York Moors. Minutes from the beach and harbour, the apartment has everything you need for a relaxing break and is a short walk to the shop and pub.
Climb the 199 steps to the abbey, marvel at the seascape and treat yourself to some locally-made jet jewellery in the town’s unique shops. Take some traditionally smoked kippers home for dinner and enjoy fish and chips by the harbour for lunch.
This comfortable apartment is the perfect place to wake up to morning views of the sea and relax at the end of the day with your canine friend and a good book.
