Chester is just eight miles from the house and is accessibly by car or by train, a journey which takes just ten minutes from the village station. Visit The Rows for fantastic shopping in unique timber framed shops. Enjoy the races at Chester Racecourse, the oldest racecourse in the world that is still operating. Established in 1539, races still take place here from May to September and it’s not just horse races, there are also regular polo fixtures, too.
Chester is home to Storyhouse, a fabulous restored 1930s Odeon cinema which was reopened with a library, theatre, cinema and restaurant complex by Her Majesty the Queen and Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle on her first official royal visit in 2018. The 800 seat theatre auditorium is the place to go to see live dance, theatre and music shows and the boutique cinema with just 100 seats offers a chance to experience theatre in an intimate space.
For the history fans amongst us, the Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker in Nantwich is an absolute must-visit. A top-secret site for over 60 years, this nuclear bunker was designed to be the centre of the regional government, had nuclear war ever broken out.
This cold war bunker has displays showing command centres, clothing to be used in a nuclear attack and you can even enjoy a cup of tea in an in the café – formerly the bunker’s mess. Stop off in Nantwich town centre, a medieval market town located on the banks of the River Weaver. Like Chester it has black and white timber framed buildings and excellent shops, from antique dealers to clothing boutiques and craft shops.
Manley Mere is a brilliant choice for a day out in the fresh air. Its boating lake is great fun for wannabe sailors and its adventure park is loved by little adventurers who are fans of mud! Manley Mere welcomes dogs on leads and has a restaurant as well as a picnic area and is home to all sorts of wildlife, from foxes to rabbits and badgers as well as various tree species.
