Things To Do in Bowness-on-Solway
Sitting on a quiet corner in the fishing village of Bowness-on-Solway, with the estuary and beach a stone’s throw away. Forget the stresses and strains of city living, and enjoy a unique holiday where England’s far north west meets Scotland.
Pub serving food 100 yards away, shop 4 miles, restaurant 10 miles. With stunning views to wake up to in the morning, it won’t be long til your furry friends are dragging you out the front door, down the footpath which leads directly to the beach which is washed by the Solway Firth.
Back into the village, stop by the dog friendly pub and plan your day out, with lots for eager people and pooches to explore.
Pick up Hadrian’s Wall Path, which starts its 84 mile span across the country right in the village. Walkers, cyclists and serious hikers enjoy this heritage pathway in their thousands. To the south is the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding National Beauty (AONB), which has guided tours and an exhibition telling the story of this fascinating area on the Scottish border.
Follow the paths up the estuary, or the river channels which pass through it. Bird watchers will love this area, which is famous for its rare species. The RSPB’s Campfield Marsh lies just to the west of the village.
A 20 minute drive eastwards takes you to the historic border city of Carlisle, with its dramatic castle and superb doggie walks by the River Eden.
You’ll also find lots of dog friendly pubs, cafes and restaurants in the city, as well as independent shops selling local produce.
Follow the M6 north and you’re across the border into Gretna, and the world famous Gretna Green, just in case anyone wants to propose.
For more practical matters, Gretna has a superb outlet village selling discounted designer items you won’t find in England.
Bank Cottage really is a unique place to get away from it all, for couples, families, friends or colleagues, plus one or two canine companions.
There’s lots of space to do what you want, with no one to bother you. The views are spectacular, with Bonnie Scotland almost within touching distance, while the Solway Firth, river channels and nature reserves are all fantastic places for days out with with your furry friends.
Take a walk along Hadrian’s Wall path, through Port Carlisle and further up the Channel of the River Esk, or head east down the Eden towards the English border city of Carlisle.
Gretna and the Scottish border are just on the doorstep, while there are also rail and road links to Newcastle upon Tyne and the Lake District National Park. A fabulous, peaceful getaway.
