Things To Do in Far Sawrey, Ambleside
Nestling on a curve in the road in Far Sawrey, a small hamlet overlooking Lake Windermere. This slate terraced cottage is a perfect example of Lakeland building, and fits perfectly into the landscape. Explore the local area with your four legged friends, starting or ending with the pup friendly pub literally across the road.
There’s cask ales and locally produced food here, so it’s a great place to start or end a tour of the local area. Beatrix Potter lived in the village, and fans of hers will recognize some of its locations from her books.
To the north is Moss Eccles Tarn, a wooded, 5 acre lake complete with water lilies and quiet places to fish. Head out here up Cuckoo Brow Lane for a healthy walk, and take in the breathtaking views all around.
Talking of views, Claife Viewing Station lies to the east, overlooking Lake Windermere. This was especially built in the 18th century to take in the whole Lake, and is now part of a 4 mile walking trail which your party, including furry friends, will love. The viewing station also has a cafe to keep everyone refreshed on the way. At the bottom of the hill is the ferry landing, which serves Bowness-on-Windermere on the eastern shore of the Lake.
The ferry runs every half hour, and takes you to the promenade at Bowness. This lovely Lakeland town has plenty of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants, plus places to hire bikes and other equipment if you need it. Steam boats also run from here across the Lake to Ambleside and Lakeside.
Dell Cottage is a unique slice of Lakeland, which will make your family, friends and canine companions feel right at home. The cosy ground floor kitchen/dining area is perfect for starting the day with a nice breakfast, and the rest of the house is perfect for just sitting admiring the views.
You’re sure to want to get out and about, and the unspoilt hamlet of Far Sawrey is a perfect place to start and end the day. There are lots of signposted walks to enjoy, and some lovely quiet spots to rest or try a spot of fishing.
Take in the stunning views from Claife Heights, and head off over to Bowness-on-Windermere for great days out, either in the town itself or the other destinations in the Lakes. Dell Cottage is both a home from home and perfect base for a Lakeland holiday
