Things To Do in Staveley, Kendal
Staveley is home to Staveley Mill Yard, once a bobbin mill which now houses businesses including Wheelbase Cycles, the United Kingdom’s largest cycle store, and the popular Hawkshead Brewery, a local real ale micro-brewery, which has been brewing session beers and pale ales since 2002.
Hops are sourced from all over the world to match the styles of ale the brewery produces. There is a restaurant on the site which is ideal for lunch before enjoying their brewery tour which takes place every day and includes a pint of their freshly-prepared ales.
Leave the car at home one day and pop into Kendal on the bus which can be caught at the bus stop just a minute’s walk from the cottage. Kendal is home to the ruins of Kendal Castle, which dates back to the late 12th century.
The castle houses displays of artefacts found at the site, reconstructions of the castle and kids will love the chance to take home a memento in the form of coin rubbing. Enjoy a picnic at Castle Hill and take the dog along – they are welcome here, too!
There are some fantastic walks for both two and four-legged creatures from Windermere which is ten minutes by car from the lodge. One of the most famous is to Orrest Head and was first undertaken by Alfred Wainwright MBE and is described, amongst other walks in his books, the seven volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells.
Just 2.5 miles long, it can be completed in less than an hour and takes in green fields, woodland and of course, a fantastic view at the summit. A circular walk to School Knott is popular as is the Tarns Walk which takes in farmland, rugged landscapes and a lovely pub at Far Sawrey.
A peaceful stay is guaranteed at Meadowbank Lodge with its brilliant location for exploring the Lake District. Catch the bus to Kendal for excellent restaurants and unique shopping experiences and a slice of Kendal Mint Cake.
Head to Windermere for invigorating walks and water-based activities. Take a trip on a boat across the lake or enjoy a coffee at a lakeside café and just take in the views and the fresh air.
Try local ales at Hawkshead Brewery or the village pub which is only 100 yards from the cottage. There is also a fantastic fish and chip shop in the village for those occasions when you want someone else to do the cooking. On warmer evenings enjoy dinner on the patio and when it’s cold, cosy up together with the wood burner lit to watch your favourite TV show.
