Things To Do in Torver, Nr Windermere
Torver is one mile from the town of Coniston, one of the Lake District’s most famous places to visit. Coniston is a lovely village with quirky cafés, restaurants, museums and shops. The Ruskin Museum is an award-winning museum which has been telling the story of Coniston since 1901.
Find out about Stone Age fell walkers, the life of Arthur Ransome who was inspired by Coniston Water, learn about the famous Bluebird K7 hydroplane which crashed in the Water and has been recently restored to its former glory and see paintings by Arthur Ruskin, the namesake of the museum, recognised as an art critic, philanthropist and social commentator.
Hit the water at Coniston Boating Centre where you can hire motor boats, dinghies and canoes for an adventure away from dry land. Kayaking and rowing boats are just some of the favourite activities on the list at the centre or you might want to head to the Bluebird Café for cake, ice cream and a cup of tea whilst you watch others get wet.
For a change of scenery, take a drive to Haverigg beach at Millom. It’s just over half an hour away and a favourite for dog owners. With the Cumbrian hills behind you, enjoy the contrast of the sand and sea because on this beach you really are surrounded by nature at its finest.
Lined by dunes with butterflies fluttering over them, Haverigg beach is a quiet spot to enjoy as a couple with your pooch running off into the distance. Hunt for shells when the tide goes out and enjoy the peace and quiet of this wild, unspoilt beach. Take home some shells from the rock pools as a souvenir of your trip.
Church House is a fantastic base for a couple who want to enjoy the great outdoors with good food, picturesque villages and a range of places to visit. Your dog will love walks around the lake or a day out running wild on the beaches of the Cumbrian coast.
Learn about Coniston through time at the Ruskin Museum and see for yourself why Arthur Ransome was so inspired by the beautiful surroundings for his novel Swallows and Amazons. Don your captain’s hat and set sail on-board a canoe, rowing boat or kayak at Coniston’s Boating Centre or enjoy a trip in a horse-drawn carriage amongst the Victorian stone houses in the pretty town of Ambleside.
Pop to the pub next door to the apartment for home-cooked food and a pint of local beer before heading to bed with a good book.
