Things To Do in Newton on Derwent

Known as the “Owl Village”, Newton on Derwent is a pitstop to several barn owls that fly down the middle of the main street at dusk, settling on gate posts and fences before flying to their nests in the surrounding countryside. From the Half Moon Inn, you will have ringside seats to witness this spectacle.
The pub is less than half a mile from the lodge and was recently refurbished to a high standard. It has a range of local ales, and its Sunday lunches are so popular it is advisable to book. The inn’s novel “choose your steak” service entails putting in an order for either fillet, T-bone, sirloin or rump before noon and the village’s butcher will deliver it to the pub in time for your evening meal.

Nature reserves abound in this beautiful part of Yorkshire and the jewel in its crown is the Wheldrake Ings with its big skies full of whirling flocks of birds and where you will hear the distinctive plop of an otter slipping into the River Derwent.
It is about eight miles from the lodge, but it is worth the short drive to see the bird and wildlife. It plays host to thousands of overwintering waders and wildfowl such as whooper swan, wigeon, teal, pintail and peregrine and in summer, farmland birds nest in the reserve attracted by the rich supply of insects.
Nine miles from Oakdene is Garrowby Hill, which has inspired artist David Hockney and is well worth the walk to the top, where you can take in the panoramic views over the Wolds at 807ft. An RAF memorial at the summit commemorates a Halifax Bomber that crashed on the hill in 1944.

Last Word

Only a 30-minute drive from the walled city of York, this country park lodge is located in an area full of things to see and do. A day out in the capital of Yorkshire comes highly recommended. If you can find a table for afternoon tea at iconic Betty’s, you’ll be lucky; however, there are other great little tearooms in and around the Shambles.
If you are feeling energetic, then take on the Walk the City Walls’ two-mile circuit. Alternatively, you can choose a walk along a section at a time. There are great views from the medieval stone fortifications, especially of the Minster from the part between the River Ouse and Mickelgate.

Closer to the lodge, Newton on Derwent and neighbouring Wilberfoss have their own charm and the grand Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington is only 2.9 miles via High Lane. If you and your clan need a sun, sea and sand fix, then the beautiful shores of Hornsea are an hour’s drive away. Forming part of Yorkshire’s 35-miles stretch of Jurassic coast, you could chance upon a fossil or two.

Oakwood Lodge offers a family or group of friends an excellent base for discovering and exploring a part of the country renowned for its history and its countryside and coast that is nature at its best.
