About Orchard Cottage
Flagstone floors, exposed stone walls, wooden beams, and skylights make this a truly special destination that sleeps eight. Two of the king-size bedrooms are downstairs, one with a log burner, and there is a wet room on the ground floor. Upstairs the two rooms, also king-size, share a contemporary bathroom.
The farmhouse-style kitchen with its Belfast sink has a large dining area and from the plush sitting room double doors lead out to the garden.
Outside there is a patio with alfresco dining furniture and a hot tub and in the shared garden there is a play area for the children and plenty of parking space.

Things To Do in Sunderland Bridge
Durham is not all about an age-old university and cathedral city as you will find here at Orchard Cottage because nearby are the little heard of Durham Dales. The area incorporating Teesdale and Weardale has a stand-out landscape of moors and hills, valleys and meandering rivers, dotted with picturesque villages and market towns. Keen cyclists, hikers and even leisurely walkers with dogs are in seventh heaven here. Orchard Cottage is close to one of the most handsome bridges on the River Wear. The Grade I listed mediaeval bridge has three arches and is situated just outside the village of Sunderland Bridge.
Under a mile away is the quaint dog-friendly Deeside Arms in Croxdale, locally known as the “Nicky Nac”. It is a great place to take a break from walking or cycling and its Sunday lunches are so popular it is advisable to book in advance.
Of course, you might want to take a trip into Durham to see its stunning cathedral and walk its cobbled streets, although there are some fascinating finds right on your doorstep. Low Burnhall, just 1.5 miles from Sunderland Bridge is a Woodland Trust Nature Reserve teeming with wildlife. If you are a keen birdwatcher then you will be in for a treat. Here you will find kingfisher, kestrel, and sparrowhawk. It is also a butterfly paradise and during your walk around you’ll see a variety of species including peacock, speckled wood, ringlet and orange-tip. As you follow this former coal mine’s waymarked trails, you will come across wood sculptures that include one of a miner made from the reserve’s own oak and hazel, and a pond formed from a clay pit.
This has to be one of the best sympathetically barn conversions in the county. It has taken elements of its origins and melded them seamlessly with characterful, contemporary features that provide a first-class self-catering holiday.
On a non-working farm this conversion is full of surprises. Not only is there a wood burning stove in the sitting room, there is also a working stove in one of the downstairs bedrooms, complete with an entire wall of logs. The second bedroom with an exposed brick chimney breast has double doors leading out to the patio.
Put your walking boots or your cycling shorts on because if you love the great outdoors you are going to be hard pressed to cram in the splendour of this beautiful part of the world. You have the Durham Dales on your doorstep and if you can spare the time there is the northern tip of the Yorkshire Dales that boasts the country’s highest waterfall to explore.
