Things To Do in Auchnarrow, Nr Tomintoul
Just three miles from Honey Cottage is the village of Tomintoul. With an enviable location on the River Avon and River Conglass, there is plenty to see in the village which was built according to an 18th century Scottish Highland planned village scheme, part of the Scottish enlightenment period.
Villages were planned and built to meet changing social and economic factors of the time and traces of this can still be seen today in the Georgian and Victorian buildings and the central square. A short distance from the centre of town is the Tomintoul Glenlivet distillery which produces Speyside whisky with water from the Ballantruan Spring.
Whisky has been made here since the 1960s and visits to the distillery are available when booked in advance. Glenlivet Estate itself also has a wide range of activities from walking, biking and horse riding to clay pigeon shooting and skiing in the winter months at the Lecht 2090 ski centre.
Balmoral Castle is within driving distance of the cottage and is open to the public at certain times of the year. The Scottish home to the Royal Family, Balmoral Castle’s grounds and gardens welcomes dogs on a lead. The gardens were initially planted under the guidance of Prince Albert and have since been extended and improved upon by various members of the Royal Family, including the Duke of Edinburgh who implemented plans to include a kitchen garden.
The formal gardens at the castle cover three acres of land and include Victorian glasshouses and a conservatory. The Castle Ballroom is the highlight of any visit to Balmoral Castle with artworks on display and the opportunity to see the ballroom in which the Ghillies Ball, two annual dances are held, and have been since Queen Victoria’s time.
Inverness is around an hour’s drive from the cottage and has everything you’d expect to find in a modern city. From shopping for second hand books at Leakey’s books, a fantastic 18th century church that has been converted into a one-of-a-kind bookshop to the Victorian Market which has independent shops, tailors, cafés and hairdressers, all under one roof.
The perfect base for your own tour of the Cairngorms National Park, Honey Cottage is perfect for groups and families looking to explore the area and enjoy the extensive range of outdoor activities available, with their pooch in tow.
The comfortably furnished cottage is the ideal spot to unwind in after a day in the fresh air of the Highlands and whipping up a meal could not be easier in the cottage’s well-equipped kitchen. For those days when you want someone to wait on you, the local village has several good restaurants.
