Inverness and Loch Ness are stunning. They offer some of the best scenery in the Scottish Highlands. There is plenty to do in the area, especially if you enjoy the great outdoors.
Drumnadrochit is a village on the banks of Loch Ness. It’s surrounded by glens on all sides and is a popular place to stay for visitors to the Scottish Highlands.
There are several shops here as well as a choice of pubs. Loch Ness is a body of water that is 23 miles long and ideal for long walks that you can enjoy with the dog. Take a stroll along Dores Beach where you can spot red squirrels and birds, or take a boat trip out on the water and listen to an educational commentary as you float along.
Visit the Falls of Foyers, a waterfall in a gorge that is a striking sight, or hop on a bike and see the area on two wheels. There’s a Loch Ness centre where you can learn all about this part of Scotland and see a replica of the famous monster Nessie. Urquhart Castle is an interesting place to see – a medieval ruin where you can climb the Grant Tower or take a look inside a prison cell.
With artefacts to explore and informational boards to read, you can learn a lot about the local history here. Inverness is a cosmopolitan city with a Victorian market, busy high street and choice of fine restaurants.
There’s a castle and a cathedral to visit, as well as art galleries and museums. Venture a little further and you can find villages and fishing ports along the Moray Firth that have hardly changed in generations. There is something different to see no matter which way you head.
