Things To Do in Holmbury Saint Mary, Nr Dorking
Little Birkett Cottage is located on the road leading to the picturesque village of Holmbury St Mary. Recognised as one of Surrey’s prettiest villages, E. M Forster is believed to have drawn inspiration from the village for Summer Street in A Room with a View.
The annual Prudential Cycle Race takes place in July and whizzes past the cottage. Walks and cycling are popular activities in the village and surrounding area with lots of quaint, quiet villages and hamlets in the surrounding area to explore. Shere, a local village mentioned in the Domesday Book, has a 13th century church which briefly featured in the 2004 Bridget Jones:
The Edge of Reason film and the village was also a location for the 2006 film The Holiday.
Just fifteen minutes by car from the cottage is the market town of Dorking. Nestled in the Surrey Hills, Dorking has some wonderful shopping opportunities with craft shops, jewellers, boutiques, antique shops, vintage shops and art galleries. Dorking Museum and Heritage Centre located near the town’s train station at Dorking West, tells the story of the town from the Cretaceous period to the 1960s when semi-synthetic penicillin was discovered at Brockham Park.
Guildford is also close by; only twenty minutes by car. A lido, indoor pool and water slides are great for families and the local shopping centre is ideal for some retail therapy. Newlands Corner, just four miles from the town centre is popular for its views of chalk downland, woodlands and rolling countryside. It is the place from which Agatha Christie staged her own disappearance in 1926 before being found safe and well in Harrogate eleven days later.
One of the best attractions nearby are the North Downs National Trail which stretches from Farnham to Dover. Perfect for walks with the dog, the North Downs Way is best explored on foot with a map and flask and walks can be as long or as short as you choose. Cosy fireplaces, water for dogs and a refreshing pint of locally brewed ales welcome walkers and their four-legged friends across the trail.
