Things To Do in Shaftesbury
The pretty village of Marnhull is located within the Blackmore Vale. There’s a small shop and a thatched pub called the Crown here, along with a handsome village church.
Just 15 minutes away is Shaftesbury, a much-visited town that sits 750 feet above sea level, so there are views of the surrounding countryside from every street. For the best vista, climb to the top of Gold Hill – this steep cobbled lane featured in the old Hovis adverts.
There are quaint cottages on either side of this street that appear to defy gravity. The abbey ruins here can be visited, and the gardens are lovely to tour.
Sturminster Newton is the central hub of Blackmore Vale. This market town is on the Stour River and has a water mill where visitors can see flour being ground. There’s a small museum here as well with exhibitions about local life. For a pleasant walk with the family and dog, find the path next to the river – it goes on for 64 miles in total.
Sherborne boasts bustling streets and lots of independent craft and art shops. Sherborne Castle was built in 1594 by Sir Walter Raleigh, and William of Orange was a visitor.
The splendid Grade 1 listed gardens were landscaped by Capability Brown who also created the lake. Dogs are permitted to walk in the grounds – they span more than 1,000 acres so there is plenty of space to roam.
Fleet Air Arm Museum has 4 halls containing Navy aircraft through the years. The museum tells the history of Naval flight from the first manned kite-like plane to modern-day helicopters and jump jets.
For a special place to spend a holiday with your extended family, New Inn Farmhouse is ideal. Every room is stylish and modern, with plenty of character features that make it unique.
At the front of the house there’s a meadow garden where you can all get together and play. To the back there’s patio space for a barbecue and a hot tub to relax in too.
The Blackmore Vale offers pretty villages and a river to walk along. Shaftesbury provides cobbled streets and a choice of shops, and the busy seaside town of Weymouth is just a 50-minute drive away.
